How a new website can help your business grow…

Posted on

Your website is your 24/7 shop window, make it attractive and easy to use!

In the “always-on” connected world we live in, consumers expect to find information quickly and easily, and this includes your customers and potential customers!

One of the most effective ways you can help potential customers find out information about your business is through a website. Business owners should consider their website as their “online shop window” – a place where people can get a first impression of your company and its services. Perhaps equally as importantly, a website is always available, meaning that it can help you to promote your business any time of the day, or day of the week.

But how can you make improvements to your website that help your business grow, and what are they key changes you can make? We’ve set-out a few tips that will help make your online shop window attract potential customers:

Make it SEO friendly…

This is an essential for any website. If the website is your shop window, the search engine is the sat-nav to your shop. SEO stands for “search engine optimisation” and the websites that appear as the first result on Google are very well optimised for search. Make sure you identify which keywords your customers will use to search for you and adapt your site content and data to match these searches.  It’s not just about keywords, however.  Things like site speed, mobile device responsivity and page headings are all important. Make this a priority!

Adapt for mobile users

Building on the SEO point, mobile responsivity is a crucial factor in an effective website. It’s a well reported fun fact that more people now own a smartphone than own a toothbrush, so your website absolutely must render well on all mobile devices to ensure a fluid and easy to navigate user experience. Just ask yourself, would you persevere to find out information about a company on a website where you had to “pinch and zoom” on every page?

Consider video and rich media instead of text and documents

Nowadays we are inundated with content vying for our attention – from social media feeds to YouTube videos, NetFlix to emails and calendar. Your online customers are more time starved than ever and want to receive the core information on your business quickly and easily.  Chances are they would prefer not to read a long PDF filled with product technical information.  Instead, users are far more engaged with short, snappy video content, image galleries, and concise, bullet point style text.

Create clear call to actions

Online visitors to your website appreciate some guidance. Your website should be designed in such a way that it guides users to a specified call to action – whether that be a contact button, adding a product to basket, or a newsletter sign-up.  With this approach in mind, your online shop window will start to work for you, and become less of a series of pages of information and more of a “digital store” in its own right.

Use your analytics data for consistent improvement

Making all these changes to your website is great, but how do you know if it’s even working? The key is to integrate and consistently review your online analytics suite.  The industry standard analytics package is Google Analytics and for good reason. Analytics can tell you basic information like how many people are viewing your website, where they are located, which pages they are viewing and for how long. Taking this one step further, you can set-up your analytics to tell you which buttons are being clicked, how much money you are making from online sales, how many site visitors are “converting” to into customers and what products they’re buying and for what average order value.
